Living the Good Life

Around the year 300 AD, a group of hermits came together in community.  This was the beginning of the practice of Monastic Life.  Tell more about monastic life:  the history, what it entails, etc.

  5. In the Benedictine system each monastery was independent, with monks following the rules of their abbot, and nuns of their abbess. Under good and saintly leaders this worked very well, but this was not always the case. So in the tenth century a movement to reorganize monastic life began at the French monastery of Cluny.

  8. Many monks and nuns support themselves by farming, baking, etc. They also support their monasteries by teaching, religious sculpturing and painting, and working in their parish offices.

  9. Benedict of Nursia lived in the western part of the Roman Empire. He founded a monastery at Monte Cassino,Italy around 529.

  11. In the year of 300, Anthony of Egypt gathered a group of people and took them to a small place to help each other. The people in the small town had lived a Monastic Life.It means to live in a world of prayer, work, study, amd the needs of society.

They often support themselves by their own labor which includes farmwork or manufacturing goods such as candy, cake, wine, and bread. Monks and nuns also make religious paintings and sculptures. Also they may teach in schoold and collages or may work in nursing, social work, and parish ministry.

  13. At first these people lived aqlone as hermits often in desert regions. Then in about the year 300, Anthony of egypt brought together a group of these solitary hermits to live in community supporting each other in leading holy lives. Thus monastitism began. Monastic life is a life dedicated to prayer, work, study and the needs of society.
